Old sock, new sock, short sock, crew sock

The rise of the crew sock. Or rather, the rise of the sock height. Crew socks (which sit from quarter-crew to mid-calf) are having their moment, exposing a generational gap in the process. But is there really a perfect height for socks, or are we chasing a pipe dream.
Sock height is very much a matter of personal preference and style, and so there isn't really such a thing as a perfect sock height. According the style experts at GQ in a recent article1: “There’s not really an ideal sock height, and your choice will come down to how much sock you want to show off and what shoes you’re wearing. Opt for no-shows if you want to have protection between your feet and your shoes without looking like you’re wearing socks; go for ankle-height for just a little bit of extra coverage; and choose calf-length socks for pretty much any other occasion.”
Socks are an expression of your style, and as you literally walk all over (with) them, comfort is as much of a consideration as style is. We’ve all experienced sagging socks that end up in a bunch in your shoes, making life a walking nightmare.
Some socks are more versatile than others though, and crew socks definitely fit into that category. They look good with a wide range of shoes, from sneakers to sandals to casual and flats, and they go with pants and jeans as well as shorts and skirts.
"Because the truth is, trends come and go, and partaking in the ones that fit your vibe is half the fun of enjoying fashion, and an important part of finding your personal style.” - Refinery29
Ankle socks and no-show can seem a little confusing, as often it isn’t clear whether the wearer chooses to show them or had intended not to, and their fit and comfort can be a little more complicated. Crew and quarter crew socks generally sit more comfortably, and they are more expressive, as they show a little more sock and thus more of your personal style. So while crew socks might score higher for comfort, if you prefer the style of ankle socks then go for it. And if that shows your age, take it in your stride and keep walking your own path.
