How to care for your socks

So you’re ready to invest in a proper pair of socks, and of course it matters how long those socks will last you. So how long should a pair of socks last?

Well, it depends. More specifically, it depends on a few variables, one of which is the quality of the sock. Good socks should get you over a year of regular (once a week) washing and wear, whereas socks made from low-quality materials will quickly start to fray, lose their shape and ultimately develop holes.

"The average person will spend around a third of their life wearing shoes, and that can only mean the same, if not more, for socks (including wandering around the house), so they’re worth investing in.”

Apart from the quality of the socks and the material that is used to make them, the longevity of a sock depends on the wearer and what the socks are exposed to. We’ll look at what makes socks wear out, and how to ensure they last longer.

How to care for socks

First of all, as mentioned above, the quality of the sock plays a big part - this includes how it is made and what it is made from (see what makes a good quality sock, and how to tell).

Second is the fit - the better a sock fits, the less it will move around, and the longer it will last. An ill-fitting pair of socks can wear out quicker due to friction from movement. Look for a deep, L-shaped heel and sizing options.

Then there is the use of the socks, especially when worn indoors. Rough floors can quickly wear out socks, so if possible wear socks with slippers or slides indoors, rather than walking around on your socks.

What makes socks wear out

Last but not least, washing your socks has an effect on their longevity as well. Socks made from natural materials like linen, hemp, wool can get away with less frequent washing due to their moisture-wicking and antibacterial properties - they’ll last a couple of wears by simply airing them out overnight.

When you do wash them, make sure to use the delicate setting on your washing machine and use a laundry net/bag if you have it. Also, avoid tumble drying - hang your socks to dry instead.

So to sum it up - to get the most out of your socks, keep the following in mind:

  1. Do not over-wash: our socks can be aired out overnight quite a bit before requiring washing;
  2. When you do wash them, make sure to machine wash delicate, use a laundry net and do not tumble dry;
  3. For indoor use please wear them with slides or slippers, as friction will cause them to wear quicker.

When choosing socks, choose quality (well-made using quality materials and with a deep, L shaped heel), and make sure your socks are the right size, as movement will cause friction and increased wear & tear.

Finally, keep your toenails trimmed, especially if one or more of your toes stick out (Einstein famously didn’t wear socks, as his big toe apparently stuck out and kept poking holes in his socks)!
